PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To judge an uphill slope or a downhill slope of a traveling road utilizing a brake force in a vehicle. SOLUTION: An electronic control device 1 receives signals from a car speed sensor 2, a brake switch 4, a brake liquid pressure sensor 5, etc. The control device 1 calculates a time integration value of the brake liquid pressure for the time when the car speed is reduced from a first car speed to a second car speed at the time of speed reduction of a vehicle by an operation of a brake and compares a time integration value of the brake liquid pressure for the time when the car speed is reduced from the first car speed to the second car speed on a flat road with the time integration value of the above brake liquid pressure. The control device judges that a road is an uphill slope when the latter is larger than the former and that the road is a downhill slope when the latter is smaller than the former.
