PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially, advantageously producing ethylenediamine-N-N'-disuccinic acid(EDDS) or its salt from ethylenediamine and maleic acid and/or fumaric acid, each available inexpensively as industrial materials, wherein, the highly purified EDDS or its salt is obtained without strict operations nor deterioration of quality in high yield with low effluent loading. SOLUTION: This method for producing ethylenediamine-N-N'-disuccinic acid or its salt is characterized by comprising reacting ethylenediamine with maleic acid and/or fumaric acid, adding an alkali and/or an acid to the resultant reaction mixture so as to adjust pH of the reaction mixture and then treating the obtained reaction mixture by chromatography.
