PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique whereby a vehicle running ahead can be appropriately recognized. SOLUTION: Although it is ideal to recognize the vehicle only on the basis of light receiving signals reflected by a reflector at a rear end of the vehicle, it may be considered that the signals are reflected by both the reflector having a relatively large reflecting intensity and a body structure having a relatively small reflecting intensity. If the object is recognized on the basis of all photo detection signals in this state, since data of a large light reception intensity gather to the closer side from one's vehicle and data of a small light reception intensity gather to the farther side, a breadth Aw and a depth Ad of the object A are recognized to be larger than actual values and a distance Az to the object is recognized to be longer than an actual value. For solving the problem, only data of a relatively large signal intensity is extracted, so that the breadth Aw and the depth Ad of the object A or the distance Az to the object can be caught as values still closer to the actual values. |
