PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the drop of illumination efficiency, which is caused in a conventional illumination optical system using a polarized light conversion optical system. SOLUTION: The curve surface position of a third small lens 132Ab with respect to the curve surface position of a second small lens 132Aa in a second lens array 130A is arranged in such a way that the size of a first area W1 which is irradiated with light passing through a polarized light separation film 142 on an illumination area LA becomes equal to that of a second area W2 which is irradiated with light reflected on the polarized light separation film 142 and a reflection film 144 on the illumination area LA.
