摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compactly and thinly formable reflection-type optical encoder. SOLUTION: The optical encoder is constituted of a reflection-type scale 1 in which an optical lattice is formed along a measuring axis and a sensor head 2 to irradiate the scale 1 with light, to receive reflected light from the scale 1, and to output a displacement signal. The sensor head 2 comprises a side-surface light-emitting LED chip 3 mounted to a lead frame 8 in such a way as to have a light emitting surface which intersects the optical lattice surface of the scale 1 at right angles, a transparent resin body 4 formed by molding the LED chip 3 in such a way as to seal it with the lead frame 8 and forming a protruded surface in a side face 41 opposing to the light emitting surface of the LED chip 3, a reflecting film 42 formed in the side face 41 of the transparent resin body 4, and a light receiving element chip 5 mounted to the surface of the transparent resin body 4 opposing to the scale 1 to receive reflected light from the scale 1 and output a displacement signal.
