An addressing system and method are provided for reducing or eliminating an amount of input from an individual into a data communications device to facilitate data transfer. The addressing system facilitates data communications between a number of user devices (103, 106) linked to a data communications network (113). The addressing system includes a number of globally unique identifiers (161), each of the globally unique identifiers (161) being associated with a respective one of the user devices (103, 106) linked to the data communications network (113). The addressing system also includes a number of user names (256), each of the user names (256) is associated with one of the user devices (103, 106), the user names (256) being alterable by the users. A correlation table (219) is stored in a central service device (109) that is in data communication with the user devices (103, 106). The correlation table (219) links each of the user names (256) to a corresponding one of the globally unique identifiers (161). The central service device (109) employs the globally unique identifiers (161) to search a user database (223) for a number of linking parameters to establish a data transfer between at least two of the user devices (103, 106) in an automated fashion. The linking parameters may include, for example, a telephone number with which to contact a user so that the receiving device becomes connected to the network.
