PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical splice that is inexpensive and capable of surely holding the entire coated fibers even in a multiple care optical fiber. SOLUTION: The mechanical splice is equipped with a V-grooved base plate 4 on which a V-groove is formed for butting, supporting, positioning and aligning oppositely placed optical fibers 2; equipped with holding base plates 5a, 5b which are superimposed on the V-grooved base plate 4 and which are for holding the optical fibers 2 inserted into the V-groove; and equipped with a clamp spring 6 which clamps the V-grooved base plate 4 and the holding base plates 5a, 5b in between and which thus holds the optical fibers 2. The holding base plates 5a, 5b are formed with an elastic body. At a position at which the optical fibers 2 are butted against each other on the V-grooved base plate 4 or the holding base plates 5a, 5b, a recess 13 is formed which is for bending the holding base plates 5a, 5b, through the clamping by the clamp spring 6, toward the abutting part of the optical fibers 2.
