PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the backlight of a liquid crystal display device, which has improved light use efficiency, is lightened and whose structure is simplified. SOLUTION: The backlight is equipped with a reflector 40 provided with a reflection means reflecting side incident light upward, integrated translucent material layers 44 and 46 converging and diffusing light reflected from the reflector on the reflector, a supporting body 43 which exists between the reflector and the translucent material layers and supports the layers 44 and a light source 52 emitting parallel light toward the reflection means from the side of the reflector. Thereby, light use efficiency can be improved and the backlight can be lightened and structure can be simplified.
