PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet light absorber which comprises crystalline ceric oxide and can effectively exhibit excellent transparency and an ultraviolet light absorbing effect, when used as an additive for beat-resistant films, plastics, coatings, cosmetics, and so on. SOLUTION: This ultraviolet light absorber characterized by comprising crystalline ceric oxide whose surface has been treated with a surfactant in an amount of 2 to 20 wt.% based on the ceric oxide, does substantially not contain particles having diameters of >=200 nm, and has an average particle diameter of 30 to 100 nm and a specific surface area of <=70 m2/g.
