A catalyst (9) can be pre-heated and is connected to an air supply device (10) for maintaining it at a desired temperature. A temperature sensor in the catalyst is used to terminate pre-heating and commence air supply. Hydrocarbons in the gases from the reservoir are burnt in order to prevent the catalyst from overheating. An apparatus comprises a gas recovery pipe (4) extending from a transfer position (e.g. petrol pump or petrol tanker nozzle) to the first container. A pump (5) is used to generate a gas return flow at a rate greater than that arising during hydrocarbon transfer. A gas reservoir (7) connected to the gas recovery pipe for storing a proportion of the returned gases, most of the gases being returned to the first container. A catalyst is connected to the reservoir in order to convert the gas into a mixture of carbon dioxide and water. The catalyst is connected to a device used to supply air in order to maintain the temperature inside the catalyst at a desired level. The catalyst is provided with a pre-heating device so that it can be pre-heated in order to maintain it at a given pre-heated temperature, e.g. 400 degrees C. A temperature sensor in the catalyst is used to terminate pre-heating and commence air supply. Hydrocarbons in the gases from the reservoir are burnt in order to prevent the catalyst from overheating. |
