Process for operating an I.C. engine comprises mechanically coupling a switching suction pipe and switching valve for a separating sheet. An Independent claim is also included for an I.C. engine comprising a switching suction pipe (26) which changes the length of a suction path (28, 30), and a separating sheet (18) arranged in an intake path (14) with a switching valve (32) which opens or closes the channel (22) formed by the separating sheet. A single switching mechanism is provided for operating the suction pipe and the valve.
