Cosmetic or dermatological composition for artificial skin tanning comprises: (a) a carrier; and (b) a hydroxy- or alkoxy-substituted 3-unsubstituted flavylium salt (I) in an amount sufficient to produce a skin darkening ( DELTA L asterisk ) of -0.5 to -20 within 30 minutes of application to the skin at a rate of 2 mg/cm<2>, where (I) is synthetic or derived from a plant extract.
