The invention concerns a universal hook iron having a retaining connection piece which can receive the end pieces of standard hook irons and which, associated with a pulling device, a catching device, a sheath and a manoeuvring device, can use the tension imparted to the wire whereto the hook is caught to be guided thereto. In the non-traditional use of the hook iron, the user places the wire in the catching device, then actuates the manoeuvring device. The pulling device drives the wire into the retaining connecting piece until the stem of the hook deeply penetrates therein. The hook, retained by the hook iron, can then be easily removed.
