A crane installation comprises rails (13), a travelling member (14) which runs along the rails between the building (9) and a maintenance area (10), and a crane unit (16). The maintenance area is separated from the radioactive area by a wall (8). An opening at the top of the wall allows the crane to pass through, and has a movable screening wall which can be raised and lowered.
