PURPOSE: To provide a brake structure for a band reel in a packing machine, in which a reliable braking effect is obtained and which is excellent in response characteristics. CONSTITUTION: The brake structure is provided to a reel shaft which rotates integrally with a band reel. A brake arm 15 having a coiled spring part 16 at one of ends thereof and a passing ring part 18 for a band at the other end thereof is mounted on one end of the reel shaft 13, and one end of the brake arm 15, which is positioned on the side of the coiled spring part 16, is fixedly connected to a fixing member such as a frame of a device. When a force for sending out the band is released, the diameter of the coiled spring part 16 is made narrow, thereby causing an inner circumferential surface of the coiled spring part 16 to tightly engage with an outer circumferential surface of the reel shaft 13. Thus, it is so designed that the rotation of the reel shaft is stopped by a frictional force between the coiled spring part 16 and the reel shaft 13.
