Outer handle comprises a base body fixed in the door, a hand grip moving about an axis to effect a lock, a spring which moves the hand grip automatically to a resting position on the base body, and a piston-cylinder unit as retardant which slows the return movement of the hand grip. The cylinder of the unit is filled with ambient air. The part (15) moving one end of the unit and the part (18) deadening the other end of the unit are coupled. The piston (32) can move axially in the cylinder using a lifting device. Preferred Features: The piston has a lip seal acting against the inner surface of the cylinder. The piston consists of two disks with a ring seal between them.
