The device has a safety belt with an upper section held in a chest belt position by a belt lock in the operating position and a lap belt section and a belt tensioner (10) that transfers a tensional force to the lap and chest belts (7, 5) in a critical situation. The tensioner is joined to the lap and chest belts so an essentially identical tensional force is applied to the lap and chest belts that is independent of the ratio of their lengths.
