A grinding apparatus (1) for grinding the hard meal inserts or working tips of drill (percussive or rotary) (2), tunnel boring machine cutters (TMB) and raised bore machine cutters /RBM), said grinding apparatus (1) having means for holding one or more bits (2) to be ground and a grinding machine (5) carried by an arm or lever system (6) that permits movement of the grinding machine (5) relative to the longitudinal axis of the button (2) of the bit to be ground wherein means are provided to assist with alignment the grinding machine (5) with the longitudinal axis of the button (2) to be ground.
