The invention relates to a coil spring from an alloy steel and to a method for producing said coil springs. The aim of the invention is to produce coil springs that have a good core hardness, showing very little wear even under high constant loads, and to provide a simple method for producing such spring coils. To this end, the coil springs are produced from a steel that contains nitride-forming alloy components, wherein a nitride-containing diffusion layer forms at least part of the surface of the coil spring. According to the method for producing the inventive coil springs the surface of coil springs that are produced from a steel that contains nitride-forming alloy components is at least partially converted to a diffusion layer by nitrating it with a nitrogenous treatment gas. The nitrogen content in the treatment gas is selected such that no connecting layer is formed on the surface of the coil spring.
