The bearer (4-1 to 4-11) stack can be raised and lowered by a hoist (6) and a conveying rail arranged in the conveying direction using grippers to hold the bearers in the stack. Each gripper includes a holder whose two gripper forks are fitted out with two grippers of which each has a fork arm at right-angles to the rail which terminates in fork elements furthest from the rail. By raising the stack and moving the grippers in the conveying sense and then lowering the stack, the fork elements necessarily engage the respective bearers. The fork element consists of a plate having a U-opening with beveled upwards rims. The bearer frames have spacers (10) extending upwards and downwards and each have top and bottom contact areas for the bearers. The spacers have a bearing surface at right-angles to their extent. The spacers are exchangeable as required.
