1-(6-Methylpyridin-3-yl)-2-(4-methylsulfonyl-phenyl)-ethanone is new. 1-(6-methylpyridin-3-yl)-2-(4-methylsulfonyl-phenyl)-ethanone of formula (I) is new: Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a 4-step preparation of (I) where the third step for the preparation of N,N-dialkylamino-(6-methyl-3-pyridyl)acetonitriles of formula (III) and the last step are claimed per se; (b) compounds (III); (c) alkali metal 1-hydroxy-(6-methylpyridin-3-yl)methanesulfonate intermediates of formula (II) (for preparing (III)); (d) preparation of (II) comprising treating 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine with ozone followed by reduction with an alkali hydrogen sulfite.
