Conductive material for electrode of secondary battery with alkali electrolyte

A conductive electrode material contains a non stoichiometric cobalt oxide compound with an irregular spinal structure. A conductive electrode material contains a non-stoichiometric cobalt oxide compound which has an irregular spinal structure and is represented by formula (I). Co<2+>xCo<3+>yO4 (I) x = a value between 0.73- 0.80; and y = a value between 1.87-1.95. Independent claims are also included for: (i) a positive electrode for an alkaline cell incorporating the cobalt compound; and (ii) a process for the preparation of the conductive material.
