The waste gas from a high temperature fuel cell (SOFC) is discharged through a heat exchanger (21) into a chimney (10). A circulating system (20) containing a heat transfer medium is circulated through this exchanger to supply a room heating and domestic hot water system (3). To maintain the heat supply when the heat output from the cell is inadequate a heat sink (22) is included in the transfer medium circuit and supplied with heat from a fuel burning stove (40).
