PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating organic wastewater which involves sludge treatment capable of methane fermentation at high temperature. SOLUTION: The method for treating organic wastewater in which the organic sewage is treated in the presence of active sludge is distinguished by that more sludge than propagated quantity of active sludge in an active sludge treating tank is discharged from the active sludge treating tank, the discharged sludge is treated in a methane fermentation treating tank under an anaerobic atmosphere of >=60 deg.C, a part of the sludge left after fermentation treatment is returned to the active sludge treating tank and aerobic active sludge treatment is executed therein.
