PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly-active catalyst for polymerizing an olefin, capable of producing an olefin polymer such as a polypropylene (especially crystalline polypropylene) excellent in molding processability, suitably usable for blow- molding, sheet-forming, injection molding or the like, and having high stereoregularity and high melt tension. SOLUTION: This catalyst for polymerizing theα-olefin is obtained by bringing a contact product (component A) obtained by bringing a solid component consisting essentially of Ti, Mg and a halogen into contact with a silicon compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and R3 is a 1-6C linear hydrocarbon group), into contact with an organoaluminum compound (component B) and a silicon compound (component C) represented by the formula R1'R2'3-mSi(OR3')m (R1' and R2' are each a hydrocarbon group containing or not containing a hetero atom; R3' is a hydrocarbon group; and 2<=m<=3). The method for polymerizing theα-olefin comprises polymerizing the olefin (propylene or the like) by using the catalyst.
