PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that there is a sense of incongruity because a residual lead is retreated at an amount corresponding to a gap between a rear end of the lead and a front end of a following lead, that is, the rear end of the lead is retracted until the rear end of the lead is contacted with the front end of the following lead since a writing pressure is larger than a frictional force of a lead return stop member when writing in a state in which the gap is generated between the rear end of the lead and the front end of the following lead by retreating the following lead and a waste occurs even when the residual lead is discarded to eliminate the sense of incongruity. SOLUTION: In a mechanical pencil comprising a lead feeding mechanism disposed in a body, the mechanism is disposed in an intermediate barrel, the barrel is disposed in the body, and an intermediate barrel moving means for retreating the barrel and then advancing the barrel in a lead feeding step is provided in the body.
