PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phenylacetylene polymer useful as a material for an optical compensating plate, a polarizing element, a reflection plate, a scattering plate, a film having coloring functions, a film for improving luminance, etc., and an optical isomer having a great refractive index anisotropy and advantageous to stability to light and an element for a liquid crystal or an optical element using the optical isomer. SOLUTION: This phenylacetylene polymer is obtained by polymerizing one or more kinds of compounds represented by formula (1) (A1 to A12 denote each H, F or the like; B1 and B2 denote each H or the like; p, q, r, s and t are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that one of A2, A4 to A10 denotes a 1-10C alkyl group or a 1-10C alkoxy group which may be substituted with F; m and n are each an integer of 0-14 when q is 0; n is not 0 when s is 1; m is not 0 when t is 1; and W denotes CH2CH2 or the like). The optical isomer and the element for the liquid crystal or optical element use the optical isomer.
