PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that a pressing operation of a refill is troublesome because a pushbutton must be pressed at least in the same amount as a projecting amount of the refill to project the refill from a distal end of a barrel and the pushbutton must be normally pressed in the projecting amount or more of the refill to lock or unlock the refill to or from the barrel and an appearance of a mechanical pencil is not good because a pushbutton member is projected from a rear end of the barrel in the same degree or more as the projecting amount of the refill in a state in which the refill is contained in the barrel. SOLUTION: In the mechanical pencil comprising a leading member is disposed projectably from or retractably in a distal end of the barrel, the leading member is constituted of at least two components and the member is projected stepwise from or retracted in the barrel.
