PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner in which resolution of reading is prevented from lowering due aging by determining tension of a linear driving force transmitting member, e.g. a wire, through a simple arrangement utilizing the characteristics of a stepping motor. SOLUTION: The scanner comprises a stepping motor 40 as a drive source, a wrapping transmission means for transmitting the driving force of the stepping motor 40, a scanning body being moved by the driving force from the stepping motor 40 through the wrapping transmission means, means for regulating tension of the linear driving force transmitting member in the wrapping transmission means, means 63 for detecting step-out of the stepping motor 40, and means 60a for calculating information concerning to tension of the linear driving force transmitting member based on results detected through the detecting means 63 by varying the output state of the stepping motor 40.
