PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find out a means capable of improving the metabolism of the skin and preventing even the aging of the skin by using an ingredient different from anα-hydroxy acid or a vitamin A derivative and especially capable of promoting the decomposition of desmogleins. SOLUTION: This composition for external use comprises a propanediol derivative represented by the following formula (I), wherein, R is hydrogen atom, methyl group or ethyl group, or its salt.
