This invention relates to methods for measuring the binding interaction between a leukocyte adhesion molecule and a vascular endothelial ligand in whole blood ex vivo. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the leukocyte adhesion molecule is the integrin alpha4beta1, also known as Very Late Antigen-4 (VLA-4) or CD49d/CD29, and the vascular endothelial ligand is Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1). The methods are especially useful for measuring the effects of compounds which modulate the binding interaction between the adhesion molecule and its ligand. |
