A rolling cutter lubrication arrangement separates a bearing assembly (30) from a face seal set (40) through the use of an auxiliary seal (80). In particular, the auxiliary seal (80) is disposed adjacent to a main bearing assembly (30) present in a typical rolling cutter. In such cutters, a pair of bearing assemblies (30) are concentrically mounted about a shaft (20) and support a cutter hub (10). Axially displaced from each bearing assembly (30) is a face seal set (40) positioned proximate to outboard portions of the shaft (20). A first lubricant cavity (70) is defined by the shaft (20) and cutter hub (10), and the face seal sets (40). The auxiliary seal (80) is positioned adjacent an inboard portion of each primary seal thereby segmenting the lubricant cavity (70) into a first (98) and two second (94,96) sub-cavities. Suitable passages (90,92) may be created in the hub (10) and the shaft (20) to facilitate lubrication. Methods of creating such an arrangement are also disclosed. |
