PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of executing inspection at arbitrary timing with good workability and self-diagnosis and which is capable of easily recognizing the change in the performance with lapse of time in deciding whether the recording performance of an information recording and reproducing device 1 which houses many optical disks and is arranged with drive device 5, 6, 7, 8 which performs recording and reproducing of the disks 14 is good or not. SOLUTION: The specific disk among the housed disks 14 is used as the disk 15 for inspection in inspecting the recording function of a drive 5 and the number of the occurrence of alternate sectors generated on the disk 15 side for inspection in the inspection is detected to decide whether the recording function of the drive 5 is good or not.
