PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable maintenance of a productivity in response to an image quality while maintaining an S/N. SOLUTION: In an apparatus for reading an image for generating an image signal by illuminating an original, photodetecting its reflected light and photoelectrically converting the light, an original reading speed V is controlled in response to an original reading resolution D so as to satisfy D*V=N (N: arbitrary constant), wherein D (dpi) is the original reading resolution and V (mm/s) is the original reading speed at that time. Thus, both high image quality reading and high speed reading can be conducted by using the one apparatus for reading the image without enhancing performances photosensitivities of an illumination system, a lens and a CCD.
