PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing device which has a long life and provides a satisfactory image by preventing effectively a temperature increase in a paper non- passage area and hence deterioration of a pressing member and film and hot offset. SOLUTION: The fixing device 8 has a support body 12 supporting a heating body 8A, and an endless film 10 freely movably provided in contact with the heating body 8A and the support body 12. The device also has a pressing member 11 disposed in pressure contact with the heating body 8A via the endless film 10. The fixing device 8 is capable of applying heat energy of the heating body 8A to a recording material P by carrying the recording material P while holding the recording material P between the endless film 10 and the pressing member 11. In the fixing device, a cooling member 13, which is divided in a plurality of sections in the longitudinal direction of the pressing member 11, is provided in the vicinity of the pressing member 11. The device is also provided with a mechanism which brings the cooling member 13 into contact with the pressing member 11 and separates from it.
