PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To balance the improvement of the image quality with the increase of the photographing time of an image pickup apparatus having multi-pixel image pickup devices in photographing with the power fed from a battery. SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus has multi-pixel image pickup devices and can be driven with the power from a battery. The apparatus is capable of photographing in a first mode (S13) of reading data of all pixels of the multi-pixel image pickup devices of the apparatus, and reducing the read data to data of images having a specified smaller number of pixels than the pixel number of the image pickup devices and a second mode (S11, S12) of reading data from a part of the pixels of the image pickup devices so that the pixel number of the images agrees with the specified pixel number. The controlling method comprises a step (S10) of comparing the remaining power capacity of the battery with a specified capacity, and a step (S10) of photographing in the first mode, if the remaining capacity is over the specified capacity, but controlling the photography in the second mode, if below the specified capacity.
