The power tool includes a piston which is driven by the combustion of a gas mixture, and includes an indicator showing the position of the piston within its guide cylinder. The position of the piston within the cylinder is monitored in order to determine when the exhaust valve should be opened, following complete piston withdrawal. The tool includes a piston (8) which is restored to its initial position, after the combustion of a combustible gas mixture in a combustion chamber (1), by the depression established within the combustion chamber. To allow a complete return of the piston (8), the exhaust valves (34) must not be opened since this would reduce the depression. For this reason the translational position of the piston is monitored to determine when it has returned to its original position. The piston is guided within a cylinder (5), and a piston guide rod (10) projects outside the cylinder, the length of the rod outside the cylinder being an indication of the position of the piston.
