The present invention provides a system and method for managing relationships between source data, independent of format, notation, database management system, operating system and computing platform. The present invention comprises an interface through which requests for sets of nodes and properties, representing source data are made. These requests are provided to an object manager. The object manager is operable to manage multiple sets of nodes and properties, relationships between members of these sets, and retrieve a particular set representative of the requested source data. This object manager may be further divided into a modular storage module in which sets of nodes and properties are stored and a management module in which the relationships are stored. Additionally a notation processor can be directed by the object manager to construct or reconstruct sets of nodes and properties and export these to the object manager.
