The unit has a motion sensing arrangement, a dialing block for entering telephone numbers, a call number memory and an observation medium (e.g. webcam) connected to a power supply and to the telephone network, either by wire or cordlessly. When changes occur in a room a predefined call number is dialed and an alarm triggered. Images can be transmitted to enable the remote observer to assess the changes.
