PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to achieve an improved operating rate of the air conditioner and user convenience by performing compensation operation for power outage in accordance with the current location of the air direction adjusting unit. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a first step of judging whether a power is re-supplied after occurrence of power outage; a second step of detecting the current location of the air direction adjusting unit, if a power is re-supplied; and a third step of performing operation or proceeding to a stand-by state in accordance with the current location of the air direction adjusting unit. An apparatus comprises an air direction adjusting unit for adjusting the direction of the air being discharged into the indoor area during the operation of the air conditioner; a closure sensing switching unit interlocked to the air direction adjusting unit; and a control unit for judging the operation of operation stoppage of the air conditioner in accordance with the operation state of the closure sensing switching unit, when the power is re-supplied after occurrence of power outage, and performing an operation compensation control upon occurrence of power outage.
