Separating impurities from bulk materials, e.g. gravel and sand, comprises placing a quantity of bulk material in a vessel (4) and producing a current flow. The flow speed is temporarily increased, especially for a short period, so that the bulk material and the impurities rise from the base (6) of the vessel. As the flow speed decreases the impurities, which have a lower density than the bulk material, fall more slowly back to the base of the vessel than the bulk material. An Independent claim is also included for a device (2) for separating impurities from bulk material. Preferred Features: The flow speed is increased in sharp bursts. The speed is continuously reduced after being increased.
