A method and device for discriminating between an EDGE COMPACT mode and a GSM/EDGE CLASSIC mode in a radiotelephone transmission received by a radiotelephone device are provided. The method comprises the steps of receiving a synchronization burst (601) in the radiotelephone transmission and correlating (607) the synchronization burst to an ETS code contained within the radiotelephone device. The ETS code is either an EDGE COMPACT ETS code or a GSM/EDGE CLASSIC ETS code. The method continues reception (615) of the radiotelephone transmission if the synchronization burst substantially correlates to the ETS code. The EDGE COMPACT ETS code is substantially orthogonal to the GSM/EDGE CLASSIC ETS code. |
