PURPOSE: An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to prevent residual images on a screen by reducing remaining DC. CONSTITUTION: A lower substrate(30) is positioned opposite to an upper substrate(40) with a specific cell gap. An LC layer(50) including plural LC molecules is formed between the upper and lower substrates. The LC molecules have positive or negative dielectric anisotropy. Counter electrodes(32) are arranged in comb type on the lower substrate. A gate insulating film(34) is formed on the lower substrate, and pixel electrodes(36) are formed on the gate insulating film to form a fringe field with the counter electrodes. A color filter is formed on the inner surface of the upper substrate. Anodes(42) and Cathodes(44) are arranged regularly in strip type to prevent remaining DC on the color filter. A second parallel alignment layer(46) is formed on the upper substrate having the anodes and cathodes. The second parallel alignment layer has a rubbing axis non-parallel with a first parallel alignment layer(38). The anodes and cathodes are arranged vertically to the rubbing axis if the LC molecules have positive dielectric anisotropy. In case of negative dielectric anisotropy, the anodes and cathodes are arranged parallel with the rubbing axis to minimize distortion of an electric field. If fringe fields are formed between the counter electrodes and the pixel electrodes, impurities in the LC layer and the pixel electrodes are removed by the anodes and cathodes.
