Reagents and methods for regulating the high affinity binding of GluR5-like receptor (GR5LR) to kainate are provided. Such reagents and methods can be used <i>inter alia</i>, to treat or prevent urinary incontinence, epilepsy, schizophrenia and other mood disorders, neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease and Alzheimer's disease, ischemia, and pain.
