PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide free cutting steel excellent in machinability in an as-rolled state without addition of lead. SOLUTION: The chemical composition of the steel is regulated so that it consists of, by mass, <0.05% C, <=2.5% Si, 0.10-4.0% Mn, >0.20-0.8% S, >0.004-<0.08% B, >0.008-0.050% O, <0.050% N and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
