PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inspecting method and apparatus for carved characters which can highly accurately inspect that prescribed characters are carved correctly on an object to be inspected. SOLUTION: The inspecting apparatus 3 for carved characters is constituted of a projection means 6, a measuring means 7, a measuring position control means 8 and a personal computer 19 being an inspection means. Light kept in polarized state, emitted from the projection means 6 is made to irradiate a frame 1, where characters of car number are carved to be reflected and out of the reflected light, the light kept in polarized state by being reflected directly at the part without the inscribed characters is intercepted by a polarizing plate 15, and most of the light which is turned into non-polarized light by being irregularly reflected at the modified part of the surface by the carving of the characters is made to pass through the polarizing plate 15 to measure the intensity of the transmission light. Based on the intensity of the transmission light measured, the carved characters are recognized, and the recognized characters are compared with characters set on a controller 9 to inspect that the set characters are carved correctly on the frame 1. |
