PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a purifying method of coal tar which is possible to remove more tailing contained in the coal tar than the conventional method in manufacturing the coal tar by cooling a gas derived from a coke oven. SOLUTION: In a purifying method comprising spreading ammonia water to the gas derived from the coke oven, cooling and leaving to stand the resulting condensate together with the ammonia water in a coal tar decanter to separated an ammonia water layer, a coal tar layer, and a precipitated tailing layer and then drawing the coal tar, the purifying method comprises introducing pitch powder into the coal tar decanter and further centrifugally separating the coal tar drawn from the coal tar decanter.
