PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal wire in light weight and improved in strength without lowering the rigidity, and to provide a pneumatic tire produced by using the metal wire. SOLUTION: The metal wire for a tire has a polygonal cross-section having lobes projected outward. Preferably, the number of lobes is 3-6 and the tip end of each lobe has a curvature. The metal cord composed of the metal wires is used as a reinforcing material of a tire.
