PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which can be easily manufactured in a large area, which has high mechanical strength and which is free from peeling of the substrate. SOLUTION: A transparent substrate 1 is a film substrate and a transparent electrode 2 is formed on the transparent substrate 1. A semisolid liquid crystal layer 6 containing a cholesteric liquid crystal is formed as a semisolid display layer having memory property to store a displayed image on the transparent electrode layer 2. A transparent substrate 3 is also a film substrate, and a transparent electrode 4 is formed on the transparent substrate 3. A photosensitive layer 7 is formed on the transparent electrode 4 and a light-absorbing layer 9 is formed on the photosensitive layer 7. Further, an adhesive layer 8 is disposed in the periphery of the semisolid liquid crystal layer 6 between the transparent substrates 1, 3 while forming a space 8a between the adhesive and the semisolid liquid crystal layer 6. The transparent substrates 1 and 3 are adhered by hardening the adhesive layer 8.
