PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of calculating the quantity of soil operated in a hydraulic backhoe, by which the quantity of soil operated in the case of excavation works can be calculated accurately even when soil remains in a bucket after soil discharge. SOLUTION: Signals output from pressure sensors 10-12 and angle sensors 13, 14 are taken in and the operation of the hydraulic backhoe is classified by an operation classification arithmetic section. The posture of a front attachment 3 is operated arithmetically by a front-posture arithmetic section during forward slewing operation after excavation is conducted by the bucket 6 and a boom 4 is lifted while load in the bucket 6 is calculated by a load arithmetic section and data are stored, and the posture of the front attachment 3 is operated arithmetically again during return slewing operation after soil discharge while load in the bucket 6 is calculated, and the quantity of soil operated is calculated from the difference of load in this case and load during forward slewing operation stored by the load-data storage section.
